JAPANESE BIBLIOGRAPHER
EAST ASIAN LIBRARY
UNIVERSITY LIBRARY SYSTEM


The East Asian Library of the University of Pittsburgh seeks an innovative and experienced Japanese Bibliographer. This position reports to the Head of the East Asian Library (EAL). The incumbent is responsible for the Japanese collection development/management as well as reference and instruction services in Japanese studies.

Responsibilities:
  • Select Japanese materials in all formats according to the needs of the collection and in relation to the teaching and research programs in Japanese studies at the University; assist in the expenditure of Japanese materials budgets through selection work.

  • Maintain knowledge of the book trade, of academic publishing, of serials publications, and of electronic resources about Japan.

  • Maintain knowledge of Japanese studies as an academic discipline.

  • Prepare and write proposals to relevant foundations for funding library materials.

  • Prepare statistical reports to the Head of the East Asian Library on collection development.

  • Work closely with the Public Services Librarian at the EAL to develop library instruction programs for Asian Studies as well as other faculty and students.

  • Provide and promote specialized instruction services to students and faculty involved in Japanese Studies.

  • Prepare appropriate publications to the library users in order to facilitate their work such as resource guides, new book lists and subject-specific bibliographies.

  • Work closely with the Japanese Cataloger to ensure quality of original and copy cataloging of Japanese language materials in all formats.

  • Participate in appropriate activities within the University Library System, the East Asian Library, and the University in order both to publicize the collections and services of the East Asian Library and to better integrate the collections and services into needs of its constituents.

  • Participate in other professional activities including publications and professional organizations.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Required:
MLS from an ALA-accredited library school (or recognized foreign equivalent); at least two years of experience in Japanese reference and bibliographic work in academic libraries; at least a BA in an Asian studies field; near native fluency in spoken and written Japanese; high level of professional competency in written and spoken English; substantial knowledge of Japanese studies scholarship; strong interest in working with faculty and students; familiarity with the development and management of e-reference services; strong commitment to excellence in service, demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively; excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; and awareness of research trends and developments in Japanese Studies.


Preferred:
Demonstrated experience performing reference, instruction and collection development in East Asian area of an academic or research library; advanced academic work in Japanese studies; demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and active participation in the library profession; ability to manage and supervise collections and services including personnel; experience in writing reports and grant applications.

Librarians at the University of Pittsburgh are members of the faculty and are expected to contribute significantly to the profession as well as to perform their specific responsibilities. Successful reviews at the Third and Sixth Year of employment lead to the granting of Expectation of Continuing Employment.

KOREAN INTERPRETER

Staffing company based in Mt. Lebanon searching for a Korean-speaking person for a downtown client. Position will run for about 3 weeks, beginning on or about March 6.

The company does proxy solicitations for large multinational companies, and will be working with a Korean organization. The work will be downtown (near Duquesne University), and will pay $15-20 per hour. The work hours (due to time zone differences) will be 7 PM to 3 AM, monday through Friday.
